"My name is Staff Sergeant Freeman. I am the Senior Drill Instructor for India Company Platoon 3069. My mission is to care for and train your young man for the next three months. I am responsible for leading and guiding this future Marine through the many challenging and demanding stages of training. I will ensure that he puts forth his maximum effort. Through concerned and positive leadership, I will help him develop a strong sense of pride, self-respect, confidence, and a greater level of physical and mental endurance.
He is about to undergo a rigorous training cycle that will test him both physically and mentally. The first phase of training will take place here at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego, California. His training here will consist of: physical training, close order drill, and an introduction to military life. In addition, he will receive numerous classes on Marine Corps history, first aid, military customs and courtesies and military law.
The second phase of training takes place at Camp Pendleton, California, and consists of rifle marksmanship, field skills training and the "Crucible" event. During this period he and his fellow recruits will have attained a higher level of teamwork and esprit de corps through shared hardship.
The third phase of training will bring your young man back to MCRD. Upon returning to MCRD, the last four weeks will consist of final events such as water survival qualification, close order drill evaluation, batallion commander's inspection, physical fitness test, the practical examination of military subjects, and graduation. Your young man's graduation date is April 7, 2006.
Your young man will be facing many obstacles and may experience periods of frustration, especially during the first phase.
Positive and encouraging letters from relatives and friends will greatly contribute to his morale and attitude. High morale and a positive outlook are assets for a solid foundation and attribute to successful training. Your role in maintaining his morale and motivation can benefit his positive development.
Please be aware that initially your mail may take a little longer that the normal 2-3 days to reach your young man because the Company is just forming. On the same token, you may not receive many letters from him during the first week of training; he will be very busy.
Again, I assure you that your young man is in good hands. My team of Drill Instructors and I will always use positive and concerned leadership in the course of training and developing your future Marine. Your role is greatly appreciated in helping to encourage and motivate him through letters.
